From my understanding, you will need a protein skimmer if you are planning to have a reef tank. The live rocks or corals needs to be at a specific temperature preferably at 78-82 degrees. So if you don't have an air conditioner, you should buy one because a chiller will cost you roughly around $400-500.00. You may be able to find chillers that are cheaper, but the average price range is listed above.
