Getting Started with A Reef Tank Archives

and fish set up. I have proper heat, filtration, and protein skimmer.I have live sand but no live rock yet. I was just wondering if anybody out there with the same basic tank could tell me about how much live rock they used in their setup and what type of light they found was the best for this tank? Thanks Sam

I already own a 55 gallon fish tank with a stand. I haven’t ordered anything yet, but I have came up with a list of all the things I plan on getting. Please tell me any knowledge you have of any of the items or if you suggest something different.

Item list-
-55 gallon glass fish tank
-Stand fitted for tank
-Marineland Magnum Canister Filter 350 Pro
-SeaClone Protein Skimmer SCPS 100
-Penguin Powerhead Model 550 x 2
-Hydor Theo Heater 200 watt x 2
-Portable Refractometer
-Instant Ocean Reef Crystals Synthetic Sea Salt 150 gallon bucket
-Thermometer
-Ocean Direct Caribbean Live Sand 60lb

Looking for a good test kit also.

As for the things i plan on putting into the tank i’m not sure of. I want to add at least 60 pound of live rock for filtration. The only fish I have a strong desire to add to the tank is a Ocellaris Clownfish. Could someone please come up with a list of tank mates i can add in with my 3-4 Clownfish?

Thanks!

How much would a nano reef setup generally cost?

I have a lot of experience with keeping freshwater/brackish fish, but don’t have the money to buy a huge 120 gal tank for any large saltwater fish.. so then i discovered nano tanks, im pretty sure i would be able to handle something like this but i need to know how much they cost to set up
I plan on getting a 10 gal tank for the set up any advise on a nice brand for someone on a budget?

Any one with nano experience please help/ give advise, detailed answers would be appreciated :]

I ask this, because I see a lot of people who are beginner’s and are already interested in saltwater fish…
I have a little experience with freshwater. I have a successful 10 gallon tank, and am currently saving for a larger tank that will also be made into freshwater tropical. But eventually, after having more than one successful tank, and for awhile, I would like to attempt a saltwater.

So, for someone how has experience with freshwater, but is a beginner with saltwater, what would be the best setup? The best sized tank? The best filter or heater? Any extra items? The best and easiest fish to start with? Would a reef tank or a fish only tank be best? Anything else I should know?

I’m sure whoever wanted to, could write paragraphs worth of information. But I’m not asking for that. Just some basic info. Unless you want to give that much information anyway.

Thanks before hand!

29 gallon reef stocking suggestions(10 pts)?

I have a 29 gallon reef tank up for about 3 years and have 2 fish in there. a banggai cardinal and a helfrichi firefish. my firefish was very very expensive and don’t want to take a chance he might get hurt by any other fish but would like to add one more fish to my setup.
both of my current fish just hover in the water and I would like one that actually swims. any suggestions?
I don’t want a clown because they stay in the same area of the tank all the time and would like a fish that moves around more.
I have thought of a midas blenny but I have heard they nip at firefish in smaller tanks. I’m also considering a fairy or flasher wrasse. any thoughts on these or other SW reef safe fish that would not force my current fish into hiding or worse would be much appriciated.
I’m sorry but a tang get’s too big for a 29 gallon tank

Saltwater tank setup.?

Right now I have 2 tanks, a 10 gallon with 6 zebra danios and a 20 gallon with black mollies, platys and guppies (2 of each). I am thinking of moving my danios to the larger tank and I want to make the 10 gallon a saltwater tank. I am not sure what kind of fish to get, or to make a reef, or to have something like a sand dollar or star fish. And plus I don’t have the slightest clue how to cycle a saltwater tank. Would the current fresh water filter still work? Can someone give me the low down on how to set a salt tank up?

Saltwater aquarium tips?

I’ve decided I’d like to try my hand at a saltwater tank, I’ve had many successful freshwater tanks before but I’ve always loved saltwater tanks. Right now I’m just researching to learn the differences n see if I’m ready for one but any tips on innitial setup would be very welcome. Eventually I’d love to graduate to a reef tank but I think I’ll stick to just fish at first. If anyone is in the corpus Christi area that’d be a huge plus
I’m currrently looking at a bow front 46 gallon acrylic tank. Is that a good starter size? I’m getting mixed answers on that front. And one thing I haven’t been able to find is wether or not clown fish NEED an anemoni. Any tips on sumps?
